HOYLAKE GOLF COURSE AND THE OPEN

What a great tournament up near Liverpool. If you do not already know, Liverpool has several world class golf courses on its doorstep. Well worth a visit with your golf societies.

Hoylake has featured several times on The Open circuit. I have been lucky to play their once but it was a brutal stormy day of wet golf. For this trip I was a visitor and took on the elements to enjoy a fantastic day of golf.

Getting up ultra early I drove up to the northwest and left the car within a muddy field and boarded the park and ride bus. A fair walk from the bus drop off point and guarantee that you will meet the step quota for the day.

Not played Hoylake yet? Then definitely get up there and try out the updated par three. On tournament day there was a nearby house which had put up a bunch of scaffolding along with chairs and sofa, what a view! In effect the house owner could have marketed these seats as VIP. Perhaps luck for those folk the actual seating stand did not block their view. One for the LIV tour perhaps, I understand at some nfl stadiums the match can be watched in a drink serving jacuzzi!

The updated par three was controversial and drew mixed reactions from the players, it included an infinity green! What is an infinity green I hear you question! Sounding ‘space lake’, this is by no means futuristic but indeed complex and difficult to navigate with the potential to ruin your golf score. The ball would simply skim off the ‘up turned bowl’ like green either into the back green shrubbery or into one of the deep pot holed bunkers. For the paying spectators this revamped golf hole was gladiatorial, drawing gasps, groans and cheers. The golf hole proved so popular with golf fans there was a long queue to get seats.

The ultimate winner of The Open in 2023 was Brian Harman who played an awesome four days of golf. He had some incredible putting stats with the Taylormade Spider OS Counter Balance putter. Captain golf uses a blade putter but this will be reviewed!
